Border
Leicester and "Mondanock Mini" Sheep
Over time, we have experimented with raising most of the major
wool breeds, and have settled on Border Leicesters as our
major breed of concentration. Along with quality wool, we
searched for breeds that would succeed on poor quality pasture,
and would be compatible with border collies since we discovered
that rotational grazing is easier and far more entertaining
with the help of a well trained dog.
Border Leicesters, with their soft, lusterous, curly wool
are quiet, well behaved sheep that work well with border
collies due to their gregarious nature. They lamb easily,
thrive well on poor quality pasture, and don't eat you out
of house and home in the wintertime. They area easy and
quick to shear because of the lack of wool on their faces
and legs, have sweet temperaments, and did quite well as
4H projects when our kids were younger. Our Border Leicesters
have continued their work in show biz with our "Shepherd's
Life" Traveling Sheep and Wool program, which visits
schools, nursing homes and festivals. The best part about
them, however, is the willingness of their wool to turn
into felt, which is how we got started in the felting business.
We began to experiment with crossbreeding Border Leicesters
and Shetlands with a goal of producing a smaller sized "backyard"
sheep that would still produce a beautiful fleece while
remaining energetic enough to work with Border Collies.
The resulting crosses have produced what we call the "Monadnock
Mini". Our Minis range in size from 50-75 pounds, have
sweet temperaments, exquisitely long and lustrous wool,
superb get-up-and-go energy for Collie training, and are
easy on the feed bill. It is our hope that we will soon
produce enough high quality lambs that people with limited
space, but a desire to have sheep, will be able to keep
a couple of Mini's on a postage stamp sized pasture!
